Competition Barbecue is coming to West Jefferson, NC for Labor Day weekend, 2019 at the Blue Ridge Theater & Event Center!
The biggest barbeque competition in this area was the Blue Ridge Barbeque Festival, once held in Tryon, NC. That festival is now discontinued, and it is our hope this one will replace it.
A maximum of 40 professional competition teams can be in the event:
20 from North Carolina, five from Tennessee, five from Virginia, and 10 wild card teams. We must have your application fee to reserve your space!
Date: Aug. 30-31, and that same weekend every year for the next three or four years.
The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), Steak Cookoff Association (SCA) out of Houston, Texas, as well as the Ashe Brew Club.
Friday: 3:00 to 5:00 pm: SCA cookoff followed by awards at 5:00 pm, with a major concert that night at the Blue Ridge Theater (check the BRT&E Schedule page for details)
Saturday: 11:00am to 4:30pm: KCBS competition event: followed by awards at 5:00 pm
Saturday: 12:00am to 5:00pm: Approx. 35 microbreweries will be set up on the grounds, as well as three distilleries and a couple of wineries: Taste test the beverages along with the barbeque. You may make purchases from the microbreweries, as well.
BBQ will be for sale from vendors that are competing also with BBQ plates along with other types of food- hotdogs, burgers, etc. We will have various food trucks, one from Boondocks in West Jefferson.
Admission to the KBS Competiton competition is free: but there will be a $25 fee online ($30 at the door) for a beer "sampling" glass. There will also be a fee for parking. A percentge of the Brew proceeds will go to the Glendale Springs Vol. Fire Department.
This is not a money-making event for the theater. In fact, a certain percent of KCBS fees will go to charity. It's going to cost a lot of money to put this thing on and we are going to need sponsors in Ashe and surrounding areas to get behind and support it.
We're also going to need volunteers. Anyone who has an interest in helping out with this, becoming a sponsor, or a vendor, should contact Program Director Butch Phillips at the Blue Ridge Theater.
